Say you’ve got a handbag full of euros, a hankering to brush up on your French, a desire for seclusion and a body that needs a dose of sunshine and the stress relief of a beach vacation. Head to Guadeloupe in the French West Indies, where you’ll hear virtually no English and will encounter few American tourists.
A French territory, Guadeloupe is virtually undiscovered by Americans, unlike its sister island, the more famous Martinique. The temperature is mild year round, but the wettest time is July to November, which is also the hurricane season so time a trip here as the island has been hit by hurricanes several times.
There are several resorts to choose from, including Club Med La Caravelle, which recently underwent a $29 million renovation. From here you can stroll down the beach to Pointe-a-Pitre, the largest town in Guadeloupe. For a gorgeous view, try La Toubana. Eden Palm Hotel features Creole-style cottages on a former sugar plantation.
A collection of islands, Guadeloupe has activities ranging from hikes to waterfalls or to the top of the volcano La Soufrière, diving off Pigeon Island, a favorite of the late Jacques Cousteau, a visit to a sugar cane plantation or a jeep tour around the island. Or just relax on one of the gorgeous white sand beaches with a cool rum drink.
