A Southern Beauty is Reborn

By Jan Butsch Schroder

Vacant for 10 years, this lovely 1871 historic home in Savannah suffered neglect and abuse and was boarded up for years. Robert Bell, Jr., who also owns Broughton Street Guest House in Savannah, was driving by just as a For Sale sign was being put up. He snatched it up and spent the next two years doing major renovations to the home and just opened it as a vacation rental. Staying true to the original integrity of the home, Robert won the Historic Preservation Award for 2006 from the Historical Savannah Foundation for the renovation.

Located in historic Savannah and within walking distance of shops and restaurants, 109 Liberty West has six bedrooms, 7 ½ bathrooms and an attic media room. The home is primarily rented to large groups who take over the entire house for weddings, reunions, special events and parties but accommodations can be made for smaller groups. If it’s just you and your significant other, you can opt for the garden level apartment that has two additional bedrooms and bathrooms, a living and dining area and kitchen. Or check out the newly constructed carriage house right behind the main home. 109 West Liberty Street, 912-764-9955, www.109west.net
